About

Hi everyone,

My name is Sandra and while professionally, I work as a writer and editor, I’d really rather quilt, cross-stitch, sew or knit. This blog is a chance to share my devotion to fiber arts and some of my projects with you.

I first developed my passion for crafts from my mom. She bought me a needlepoint kit when I was a teenager that she helped me work. She also let me use her trusty old Singer, even when I didn’t know what I was doing.

I learned how to cross stitch from a good friend in college. My first piece was a primitive stamped sampler you can find here. Since then I’ve gone on to make about 25 samplers of varying sizes. My latest WIP is “And They Sinned” from Exemplar Dames. It’s a monster at 17″ x 48″ and depicts Adam and Eve’s fall from the garden. It’s really cool.

I had always wanted to learn to sew my own clothes and after taking a few classes made quite a few outfits for myself and others during my 20s. It was during that time that my mom taught me to knit after she had learned from a book. Having made me a sweater already, she figured I could do the next one myself.

My first sweater was from a book called “Disney Knits,” by Melinda Coss and Debby Robinson (Sidgwick and Jackson Ltd., 1987), and it had the Big, Bad Wolf from “Three Little Pigs” on the front. I charted the title of the character’s iconic song on the back and used a cross stitch pattern to put three pigs on one sleeve.

I took up quilting about 10 years ago and made a few quilts but it didn’t seem to hold my interest the way I thought it would. But after taking a free class on Craftsy taught by Elizabeth Hartman, called “Creative Quilt Backs,” I was hooked on the modern quilt movement! The class opened up my eyes to the exciting possibilities this new style of quilting offered.

In fact, I fell in love with it so much I started a chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild in Louisville, Ky., so I could meet others who shared my passion.

Whew! That’s a lot! If you’d like to know anything more, you can contact me at onemillionstitches@gmail.com

Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope to hear from you and learn about your favorite stitches!

XOXO,
Sandra

  1. Just letting you know I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger award. Have a look at mine if you’d like to accept as there are a couple of rules .. Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. Hi, Erin – thank you so much! What an incredible honor. I am so flattered by the nomination. I’ll stop over at your site to look at the rules soon.

  2. Hi there Sandra, It was so lovely of you to nominate me for the Inspiring Blogger award. I am honored and see that I am in some incredible company! However, I’ve been consciously cutting back on my blogging for the summer at least, so won’t be able to pass it along right now. It was very thoughtful of you, though and I don’t take it lightly!
Your supernova swap is wonderful and how fantastic that you have so many participating. Great idea with the 25 questions, as well. It will be fun to keep track of your progress.
    Blessings to you,
    Carla

  3. What a great blog you have here. I stumbled across you because I want to sew a fleece blanket. Great tutorial. You also inspired me to try again my hand at a quilt! Thanks.

    1. Thanks so much for the kind words! Definitely try the blanket. It’s so easy and will be a big hit. If you make one, I’d love to see a photo. And do try your hand at a quilt. I didn’t take it up until I’d been sewing for many years, and I’m glad I waited. The tools out now make it so much easier.

  4. I have searched world sites high and low for Ship of Life by Renee nanneman with no success anywhere. Do you have a pattern you would be prepared to sell? Here’s hoping. Thanks, REITA moores
